The mountain bike tires are using special compound that capable on dealing with extreme condition like rocks, hot tracks or other extreme things.

The modern tires are using butyl rubber which is added with carbon black which creates the black color, and silicon. For the mountain bike tires, the additives are intended to create stronger and more durable tires, as well as adding wear resistance and adding the traction or grip.

The pattern of mountain bike tires are designed to provide grip and traction on the extreme terrain that can be hard rocks, wet land, sand, dirt or other non pavement terrain. The mountain bike tires usually has deep texture and patter, the knobby treads are designed to give traction on soft surfaces.  Most of mountain bike tires also designed as puncture resistant, the addition of extra layer on the tire can provide strength and durability against sharp objects. The specially designed tires for downhill and free ride is using sticky rubber for better traction, control and durability.

Some of the mountain bike tires also using tubeless technology. The tire can run with low air pressure and pinch flat resistant. The lower air pressure for mountain bike tires is intended to give traction and improve the rolling resistance. Some of the mountain bike tires are designed for all around condition, which means the tire can handle all kind of terrain.

The more expensive tires usually lighter and having less rolling resistance that can be used for wet or dry condition, hard, soft or muddy condition.  The advantage of all around tires is its flexibility when the track has several extreme conditions to travel without any chance of changing tires.
